I grew up in Corpus Christi and graduated from Calallen High School. My dad flew corporate, so he was gone a lot and precise about everything when he was home. My mom ran the house, which in a family like ours meant running most of the logistics of four people’s lives. I went to Texas A&M for political science, then to St. Mary’s University School of Law here in San Antonio, which is how I ended up staying. My parents are up in the DFW area now, so I am there often enough that Dallas County has never felt like a road trip.
I take premises cases because they are hard. That is the actual reason, and I would rather say it plainly than dress it up. A property owner in Texas can put a customer in the hospital and walk away by arguing that nobody knew the hazard was there, or that it was obvious enough that the customer should have avoided it, or that the customer was more at fault than the company that let a walkway fall apart. Those arguments work often enough that a lot of firms will not touch these cases, and the businesses on the other side know it. The difficulty is the whole reason the cases get declined, and the declining is the reason the conduct keeps going.
So I built a practice around the ones other people pass on. That means the work is front-loaded: preservation letters out early, maintenance and inspection records pulled, prior complaints about the same spot found, and the people who actually walked that floor every day deposed before anybody’s memory conveniently softens. I have taken and defended over a hundred depositions. In this kind of case that is not a side skill, it is where the case is won or lost, because the admission that a property manager knew about a lifted slab for eight months is not going to arrive in a document production.
How the practice is focused
Most of what I do is premises liability, and most of that is trip and fall: uneven walkways, broken steps, failed handrails, unmarked thresholds, bad lighting. I also take commercial truck collision cases. I do not handle criminal defense, family law, immigration, or business litigation, and I do not take falls on spills, wet floors, or ice.
I file anywhere in Texas. Bexar County is home, and Nueces, Travis, Dallas, and El Paso are the venues I work most, but a good case does not get turned down over the county line it happened behind. When a matter falls outside what I do, I say so and point you somewhere useful rather than taking it on.
